Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Gio Reyna has been ruled out of a Saturday, Jan. 31 game against Werder Bremen with a muscle injury, coach Eugen Polanski has confirmed.

Reyna was a surprise injury absence on Sunday, Jan. 25 as Gladbach lost 3-0 to Stuttgart.

The American midfielder had appeared healthy leading up to the match, but Polanski said that he suffered an injury in training ahead of the game.

"[Reyna] withdrew from the final training session before the Stuttgart match due to muscular problems," Polanski said on Thursday at his pre-match press conference.

Polanski didn't indicate how much time he expected the 23-year-old to miss.

The setback is another blow for the oft-injured midfielder, who joined Gladbach from Borussia Dortmund last summer in an attempt to revive his career.

Reyna hasn't yet repaid the faith shown by his new side amid another frustrating season so far.

Reyna missed a pair of Bundesliga matches in the fall with a thigh muscle injury. Overall, he's made 14 appearances for Gladbach this season, including five starts. The New York native has yet to tally a goal or an assist for the Foals.

Reyna did managed to star for the USMNT in the November international window, making his first two international appearances in eight months. The midfielder scored a goal in a 2-1 win over Paraguay and notched an assist in a 5-1 thrashing of Uruguay.

But as Reyna fights to make the World Cup roster this summer, his latest setback could make it that much tougher to convince Mauricio Pochettino that he's worth a spot on the squad.
