Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Gio Reyna has been ruled out of a Saturday, Feb. 14 game at Eintracht Frankfurt with a muscle injury, coach Eugen Polanski has confirmed.
It will be the fourth straight match that Reyna has missed with the unspecified injury, which he suffered in training last month.
Reyna's latest setback has halted any chance he has of building momentum with Gladbach, which he joined last summer after a difficult period at Borussia Dortmund.
The 23-year-old struggled to get on the pitch for much of his time at Dortmund, as injuries and coaches' decisions halted his progress.
It has unfortunately been a similar story in Reyna's first season with Gladbach. The U.S. men's national team midfielder has made 14 appearances for Gladbach this season, including five starts. He has yet to tally a goal or an assist.
Reyna did manage to star for the USMNT in the November international window, making his first two international appearances in eight months.
The midfielder scored a goal in a 2-1 win over Paraguay and notched an assist in a 5-1 thrashing of Uruguay.
But as he fights to show Mauricio Pochettino that he's worth a place on his World Cup roster, the latest setback could be damaging.
The USMNT will face Portugal and Belgium in late March, the team's last two friendlies before Pochettino names his World Cup roster. If Reyna isn't fit enough for possible selection, it would make his road to a second straight World Cup squad that much touger.
