JuJu Smith-Schuster did not practice Tuesday as the New York Giants continued training camp. Head coach John Harbaugh said the veteran wide receiver was held out due to some knee swelling.
Smith-Schuster, signed in June to a one-year minimum contract with no guaranteed money, remains a bubble player in a crowded receiver room. The 29-year-old is competing for a roster spot against Odell Beckham Jr., Braxton Berrios and several other veterans and younger options.
His familiarity with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy from their time together in Kansas City gives him a potential edge as a physical, reliable possession receiver, but his production has declined in recent seasons and he must prove he still belongs.
Beckham, meanwhile, enjoyed his best day of camp. After limited opportunities early on, the former Giants star was featured more prominently, running routes effectively, getting open and receiving additional snaps and targets.
Smith-Schuster’s absence is not expected to be long-term, but every practice rep matters in a position battle this tight. The Giants will continue monitoring his knee as camp progresses.
