Record champions Germany overcame a modest first half and an injury shock concerning captain Giulia Gwinn when they started into women's Euro 2025 with a 2-0 victory over Poland on Friday.
Jule Brand opened the scoring into the top cormer in the 52nd minute and set up Lea Schüller in the 66th after the Germans had failed to create major chances earlier against the tournament debutants.
Victory came after influential Gwinn had to be helped off in tears in the 40th minute with an apparent left knee injury she sustained in a tackle against Poland star Ewa Pajor.
A diagnosis was not available immediately. Gwinn has suffered two cruciate ligament knee injuries in her career, in 2020 and 2022, which sidelined her for many months on both occasions.
Eight-time champions Germany top Group C ahead of contenders Sweden, who beat Denmark 1-0 earlier in the day in Geneva from Filippa Angeldahl's 55th-minute winner.
A minute of silence was observed before both games in memory of Portugal and Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who died in a car crash early Thursday.
