Not every member of a World Cup-winning squad becomes a household name, but every player plays a part in the journey. Erik Durm was one of the youngest players on Germany’s roster during the 2014 World Cup and represented the next generation of talent emerging from the country’s successful youth development system. Although his role on the pitch was limited during the tournament, earning a place in Germany’s squad was a significant achievement in itself. His career took several interesting turns after Brazil, making him one of the more intriguing figures to revisit when looking back at the champions of 2014.

Erik Durm’s role in 2014

Durm entered the tournament as one of the youngest members of Germany’s squad. Although he did not play a major role on the field during the World Cup, simply making the roster was a remarkable achievement given his rapid rise at Borussia Dortmund.

His versatility allowed Löw to use him as depth at both fullback positions, and he contributed to the team’s preparation throughout the tournament.

What is Erik Durm doing now?

After spells with Borussia Dortmund, Huddersfield Town, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Kaiserslautern, Durm retired from professional football in 2024. Injuries played a role in limiting parts of his career, but he still finished with a World Cup winner’s medal and a successful professional résumé.

Since retirement, Durm has maintained a lower public profile than many of his former teammates. While he has remained connected to football, he has largely stepped away from the spotlight and focused on life after his playing career.
