Georgia softball's shortstop Emily Digby is on a hot streak this postseason, and she's not letting the newest intimidating foe Tennessee shake her.
"Obviously, it felt great, nothing better, but in all, you've gotta do what you've gotta do," said Digby, who scored the lone run in Georgia's 3-1 loss to Tennessee. "One through nine, we have a job to do, and I was able to get that done. I was really proud of the way one through nine competed. Outcomes are outcomes, but we stayed within the fight."
The junior's finesse started in the regular season finale against Florida, where she blasted a two-run homer to clinch the series win.
She then went on to crush a three-run home run during a 3-for-3, two-run performance in the win over LSU in the SEC Tournament.
In the Athens Regional, she went 3-for-6 at the plate with one run.
And Thursday night, in Game 1 of the Knoxville Super Regionals, she notched her 11th home run of the season on a solo bomb in the top of the second inning to split Tennessee's then 2-0 lead in half, 2-1.
She currently holds a .360 batting average.
"For me, it's just about staying calm in the box," Digby elaborated. "Just knowing, like I've said in previous interviews, I have girls behind me and I trust them and they're going to have my back no matter what. It allows me to play freely.
"It's different to see 77 (mph) coming at you, like coach Tony (Baldwin) said, you don't see it every single day, but for me, ... I was trying to hunt something over the plate and make (Karlyn Pickens) pitch me a strike. I know she was struggling a little bit, throwing some balls, but I knew she was going to throw me one and I just had to be on time for it."
In all honestly, Digby has always been on fire. The postseason sprint of vengeance can be dated back to the first career grand slam over Belmont on Feb. 7, and the smashed lead-off solo in the fifth inning of the win over Georgia Tech on March 18. In a lot of her 1-for-3 performances, like against Texas A&M on April 3 and USC Upstate on April 8, were strictly home runs.
It's safe to say, whatever she's started isn't stopping any time soon. Maybe there'll be more smoke off her bat in game two. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN2 on Friday, May 22.
