In a nearly 5 1/2 hour tennis match where Frances Tiafoe served two times for the match in the fourth set, he loses a heartbreaker to Matteo Arnaldi.

Arnaldi looked lost in the fourth set, as though his body was giving out on him, and he trailed 5-2. He was reinvigorated by the fans who filtered in after the Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka match. He came back from a two break deficit.

Both guys made unbelievable shots hugging the lines at the five hour point of the match. It was an unbelievably high level of tennis in the end stages.

Matteo Berrettini is the benefactor

As Tiafoe and Arnaldi left their hearts and bodies on the court, Arnaldi’s Italian compatriot Matteo Berrettini could be considered the benefactor. He won his match earlier in the day in straight sets.

With Tiafoe’s loss and Madison Keys losing earlier in the day, there are no Americans in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.

That has not occurred since 2017.

It is also the first time at any Grand Slam that no Americans are in the quarterfinals since 2021.

Meanwhile, there are three Italians in the draw: Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, and Matteo Arnaldi.

The unpredictable, wild, and often chaotic 2026 French Open continues through June 7.
