Tennis fans were so eager to cheer on 30-year-old Italian player Matteo Berrettini in the French Open quarterfinal against Matteo Arnaldi.
Berrettini’s injury issues have spanned various parts of his body in recent years. He worked hard to come back and compete. The French Open was his best Grand Slam showing since his 2022 Australian Open semifinal finish.
Watching him suffer with a hip issue and retire midmatch at Roland Garros was a gut punch; however, there is one tiny tidbit of good news that Berrettini shared in his postmatch press conference.

He spoke about listening to and taking care of his body because in an individual sport, he has no backup or substitute.
Berrettini also said that this was not his final tennis match so he was mindful to stop playing so as to not make an injury worse.

Many worry that the mental and physical toll Berrettini has endured with repeated injury and recovery would cause him to call it a career if more problems persisted. If there is any morsel of good news in this depressing Berrettini day, that was it.

While Berrettini has been a quarterfinalist or better in every Grand Slam and can play on any surface, his game is best suited for the grass courts.
Hopefully by stopping play at the French Open and getting a diagnosis and treatment, he will be able to make a healthy return to the grass this summer.
