A 25-year-old outfielder released by the New York Yankees found a new home in free agency.

Anthony Hall signed with the Sioux Falls (South Dakota) Canaries of the independent American Association, the league announced May 7.

Hall, who was released from his minor league contract with the Yankees in August 2025, is a former fourth-round draft pick out of the University of Oregon.

In 48 games last season with the advanced Class-A Hudson Valley Renegades of the South Atlantic League, Hall slashed .222/.300/.306. He had only nine extra-base hits among 32 in all, while striking out 50 times in 144 at-bats.

Overall, Hall slashed .234/.333/.358 across four seasons in the Yankees’ organization. He effectively ended his run three steps away from MLB.

Hall was enough of an amateur prospect to be drafted twice. The Atlanta Braves selected him in the 35th round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Point Loma (Calif.) High School.

Hall opted to attend Oregon instead. Three years (and one pandemic-interrupted season) later, Hall was selected 130th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft — in a fourth round that also yielded future major leaguers Chase Meidroth (Red Sox) and Troy Melton (Tigers) among others.

The Canaries play in the American Association, a 12-team independent professional league that frequently courts former major leaguers looking to make a comeback.

In Hall’s case, he’ll look to launch a career that never really took off with the Yankees despite his relatively high draft position. Sioux Falls plays its 2026 season opener on May 15.

A left-handed hitting outfielder, Hall was ranked as the No. 21 prospect in the Yankees’ system in 2023. That season, he slugged 10 home runs, reached base at a .353 clip, and flashed plus defense in the outfield across two levels of the Yankees’ system.

But Hall’s 2024 season was interrupted by an injury that cost him two months out of the season. It was his third trip to the injured list in as many seasons since he was drafted.

Although Hall avoided the minor league IL in 2025, his playing time suggests he either took days off due to his health, or wasn’t effective enough at the plate or in the field when healthy to earn more playing time.

That will change in 2026, where Hall will attempt to resurrect his career at a relatively low minor league level.
