Former University of Wisconsin star John Tonje was traded just ahead of the NBA's deadline, Thursday, Feb. 5.

Tonje, who had been on a two-way deal with the Utah Jazz, was traded to the Boston Celtics for Chris Boucher, a future second-round draft pick and cash considerations.

Playing for the Salt Lake City Stars in the G League, Tonje was averaging 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 33 games. The 6-foot-5-inch guard was shooting 43.9% from the field and 35.3% from 3-point range.

The Jazz had selected Tonje with the 53rd pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. With the Celtics in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race, it's likely he will be assigned to the Celtics G League affiliate in Maine.

One of the top transfers in the country in his only collegiate season at Wisconsin, Tonje averaged 19.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Badgers and was named a second-team All-American.

John Tonje in 2024-25 (26 gms):

• 19.6 PPG
• 48.5% FG
• 41.4% 3PT
• 91.0% FT

If this holds, Tonje will be ONLY the 22nd D-I MBB player ever to avg. 18+ PPG w/ a 48+ FG/40+ 3PT/90+ FT split.

And the FIRST high-major player to do since 2017-18 (Markus Howard, MU).
