Former Washington Huskies star shortstop Sis Bates is considered one of the cornerstones for the brand-new Portland Cascade of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League, and in the team's first-ever game, Bates etched her name into the franchise's history.

With one out in the third inning, Bates poked a single down the left field line for the first hit in Cascade history, before she scored the franchise's first run when the next batter, center fielder Kendra Falby, ripped a double into the left-center gap to give her team a 1-0 lead.

However, even as Bates was able to reach on an infield single in the fifth inning as part of a 2-for-3 day, the first multi-hit game in Cascade history, it wasn't enough as her team recorded just 4 total hits in a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Blaze in the season opener.

During the 2025 season, Bates, a three-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and two-time First Team All-American during her time with the Huskies, put together a solid 2025 campaign with the AUSL's Texas Volts.

She posted a .229 batting average and .308 on-base percentage on 8 hits and 4 walks with 5 runs scored and 3 runs batted in. However, the Volts chose not to renew her contract, which led to Portland selecting her in the third round of the 2026 Allocation draft as the AUSL expanded to six teams after fielding four in 2025.

The Blaze and Cascade will return to the field on Wednesday, June 10, at 5:00 p.m. PT.
