Former NFL general manager Scot McCloughan hasn't worked in the league in an official capacity since he was fired as GM of the Washington Commanders in 2017. Since that time, McCloughan has worked as a consultant for different NFL teams while running his own scouting agency.
Before McCloughan's two-year stint as Washington's GM, he had previously served as the GM of the San Francisco 49ers. In addition to being a two-time former NFL GM, McCloughan has also worked in the front offices for the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks.
While we are in the quiet part of the NFL year, weeks before training camp, one story has dominated the league: Brandon Aiyuk's saga with the 49ers. Aiyuk and the Niners have been at odds for a while, and San Francisco voided some of his guaranteed money.
McCloughan is in a unique position to discuss the situation. He's no longer affiliated with either franchise, and he scouted Aiyuk ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft. He joined the "Kevin Sheehan Show" on Team 980 in Washington, D.C., where he discussed Aiyuk.
"When they drafted him, I said he is a No. 1 receiver talent-wise, but you be very, very careful with the character, very careful," McCloughan said. "At Arizona State, he got in trouble there, too. Herm Edwards was the coach, and I knew Herm very well, and he's like, 'Listen, he's a wildcard. We don't know if he's going to show up. We don't know if he's gonna do anything, or he might come and have the best day of his career.'"
McCloughan's words carry weight. He still has strong connections to every NFL front office. He acknowledges Aiyuk's massive talent. But he then offered a warning to the Commanders or any other team that would sign Aiyuk once he's free from San Francisco.
"What he's done, from a GM standpoint on the outside looking in, to the 49ers, is embarrassing. Embarrassing," he said. "And what you're getting in your building is going to be the same thing. There will be good days. There's going to be bad days. First year, he'll be fine. Then all of a sudden, you get the comfort zone; then you better hold on, and if you have a locker room that can control that, then power to you. But if you don't, he'll eat you up. It's all about him."
Everything McCloughan said here would run counter to what Washington GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn have preached since arriving in 2024: brotherhood, culture, character, team-first.
The most interesting part here is McCloughan's reference to Edwards, a former NFL head coach for the Jets and Chiefs. He was Arizona State's head coach when Aiyuk and Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels played for the program. Edwards is a respected voice. He loves Daniels and has spoken highly of the star QB's talent and character. It's interesting to hear that McCloughan's perspective on Aiyuk came from Edwards.
You can bet other NFL teams will reach out to Edwards again once the 49ers release Aiyuk.
