NEW ORLEANS — Lawrence Keys III was part of a Tulane football team that reset the Green Wave’s championship standard with conference and Cotton Bowl titles in 2022.
“Every time I touch the field, like, I just go back to that night. We won a conference championship when everybody stormed the field. Pretty big moment there,” Keys said.
Keys’ contributions to that unforgettable moment included a 43-yard touchdown reception in the American Conference Championship game right in front of his mother.
“That morning when I woke up, I just had a great feeling like something good was going to happen that day. Just for me to score that touchdown right there in front of her and also by the family. It was just a dream come true,” Keys said.
After two years with the Green Wave, Lawrence Keys’ dreams of playing in the NFL gained some traction.
He joined the Bills as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2024, but a training camp injury ended his time in Buffalo.
Keys was rerouted to the UFL and spent two seasons in Houston, where he led the Gamblers in receiving this spring and became their top special teams weapon.
“I was just doing things with the ball in my hand, you know? Once the ball got on my hand, just doing special things, making big plays, turning short yards into big yards and touchdowns. So it was just making special plays and just making a play when the opportunity was presented,” said Keys.
Lawrence Keys’ impressive 2026 campaign attracted interest from NFL teams, and last month the former McDonogh 35 star signed with the Detroit Lions.
“I want to win, and I want to do big things. So I feel like that was the right place. That was the right program for me to get into, you know, to bring back some juice there. You know, bring a little southern mentality up there. Those guys are huge contenders. You know, have been having back-to-back great seasons for years now. And to get the opportunity to go play with those guys is a blessing.”
