Former Tennessee basketball forward J.P. Estrella will remain at Michigan despite the Wolverines' coaching changes, according to an ESPN report.
Estrella, who transferred to Michigan on April 9, had an opportunity to leave again when former Wolverines coach Dusty May left for the head coaching position with the Dallas Mavericks.
Although the spring transfer portal window closed in April, May's departure allowed Michigan players the opportunity to transfer. Michigan tapped assistant coach Mike Boynton Jr., a former assistant at South Carolina and previous head coach at Oklahoma State, as May's replacement on an interim basis.
Estrella spent three seasons at Tennessee, with his most productive year in 2025-26. The 6-foot-11 redshirt sophomore played in 33 games and became a starter for the Vols in the back half of the season. He averaged 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds on 59.6% shooting and was one of the top targets in the transfer portal.
Estrella was one of six former Vols who found new homes. Bishop Boswell (Maryland), Jaylen Carey (Missouri), Amari Evans (Texas), Clarence Massamba (UC Davis) and Cade Phillips (Texas A&M) were the others.
