Mike Boynton Jr. and the Michigan men’s basketball program continue to add to their list of good news this offseason following the unexpected departure of Dusty May to the Dallas Mavericks. Transfer forward J.P. Estrella is officially staying with the Wolverines for the 2026-27 season, reaffirming his commitment to Michigan despite May’s exit last week.

Estrella becomes the second transfer portal player to re-commit to Michigan, joining center Moustapha Thiam, who announced his re-commitment on Wednesday.
Estrella transferred to Michigan from Tennessee this offseason as one of the more intriguing big man prospects in the portal. Ranked as the No. 23 player in the transfer portal and the No. 7 power forward in the country by 247Sports, Estrella was widely regarded as one of the best available front court pieces available this cycle, and May’s staff landed him as part of what became the No. 12 ranked transfer class in the country.
At Tennessee, Estrella was largely underutilized despite his obvious talent and skillset. The expectation heading into his season at Michigan was he would finally get the opportunity to show what he is capable of in a system better suited to his abilities. That opportunity has not changed with Boynton now at the helm; Estrella will still have a major role since Aday Mara, Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. all moved on to the NBA following last season’s national championship run.
Estrella’s decision to stay in Ann Arbor and not re-enter the portal is significant news. Alongside Thiam, he gives the Wolverines two high-quality big men who were specifically recruited to fill the void. Losing either one at this stage of the offseason — with the portal largely dried up and roster options incredibly limited — would have been a serious blow to Michigan’s championship aspirations.
Together, Thiam and Estrella give Boynton and company a credible one-two punch that allows Michigan to continue playing the style of basketball that May built over the past two seasons. Thiam brings the rim-protecting, shot-altering presence at the 5, while Estrella will likely man the 4.
Michigan’s retention efforts are really starting to take shape now. Boynton has now secured commitments from Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney at the guard spots, Thiam at center and Estrella at power forward. That is the backbone of what should still be one of the best rosters in the country heading into next season.
The players have until July 24 before the portal officially opens, and Boynton has made it clear he is operating with urgency. Every commitment secured before that date is another piece of the championship puzzle locked in place, and another piece of evidence that the culture May built is bigger than any one coach.
