Former Tennessee baseball pitching coach Josh Reynolds was hired by Virginia Tech on June 17 as the Hokies' director of pitching performance and baseball analytics.
Reynolds, who was fired by Vols coach Josh Elander on June 4, will help oversee Virginia Tech's pitching staff alongside pitching coach Doug Willey.
“I have personally known Josh for more than 15 years," Virginia Tech coach John Szefc, with whom Reynolds was an assistant at Kansas State from 2011-12, said in a school release. "He is one of the best pitching guys in the business."
Reynolds spent the 2026 season as pitching coach after spending 2025 as director of baseball operations and pitching performance.
Tennessee had its streak of five straight super regional appearances snapped this season.
The Vols had a their highest team ERA since 2013 this season at 4.72, which ranked ranked seventh in the SEC and 49th nationally. Their 6.05 ERA in SEC play ranked 10th in the league. Although Tennessee did finish its season with top-20 national marks in strikeouts per nine innings (10.3), walks per nine (3.13) and WHIP (1.27), Elander said in a school release that "it’s best for our program to move in a different direction from a pitching standpoint at this time."
A short search led to Tennessee hiring East Carolina's Austin Knight on June 6 to replace Reynolds. Knight had been on ECU's staff since 2020 and its pitching coach since 2022, leading a staff that finished top-25 nationally in ERA three times (2023, 2024, 2026).
