We've officially entered the training camp edition of the Pittsburgh Steelers' countdown to kickoff. With fans needing to wait only 45 more days until the Steel City brand of football returns when the Steelers host the Atlanta Falcons on September 13, we'll take a look at the most recent and best players to ever wear No. 44.
Bruener, who was drafted by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, is a terrific special teams ace and is the current No. 44 wearer on the roster.
No. 44 doesn’t have the storied Steelers history of some other jersey numbers, but the best to ever wear it was arguably cornerback D.J. Johnson.
Johnson, drafted by Pittsburgh in the seventh round with the 174th overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, would play five seasons with the Steelers from 1989 to 1993, three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, and one with the Arizona Cardinals.
During his NFL career, Johnson played in 117 games and recorded 19 interceptions, 12 of which he accumulated during his time in Pittsburgh.
