It is now officially official.
On Wednesday afternoon, former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson announced his retirement from professional football. After 14 years and four teams, the former Wisconsin Badger is hanging his cleats up.
This was not an unexpected move. Earlier in the week on Monday, it was reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport that Wilson would be signing a deal with CBS Sports to join their Sunday pregame show as an analyst. Rapoport did mention in his tweet that Wilson may not be outright retiring, but putting a "pause" on his playing career. Well, it appears to be a bit more final than initially reported, as Wilson put out a video on his social media, which can be seen in the tweet below.
When we at Seahawks Wire posted an article about Wilson joining CBS Sports, we did a sort of career eulogy preemptively in the same story. You can read it here, as we reminisce about the highs and lows of Wilson's time in the NFL, with all the highs and lows that came with it. But now that it is officially official, as we said at the top of this article, all we feel is... gratitude.
What is undeniable about Russell Wilson's legacy is he helped usher in the golden age of Seahawks football. For the first time in franchise history, the 12th Man got to watch an absolutely electrifying quarterback. At his peak, there was no doubt Wilson was elite. There were countless games over the course of the decade that were won solely by the magic he pulled off on the field. He was truly a one-of-one player.
Russell Wilson isn't just the single best quarterback in Seahawks history - a title that might not ever be reached by another - he is simply one of the best to ever put on a Seahawks uniform. There aren't many fans around the league who can say they got to witness something this remarkable, especially when said player helps bring home their team's first ever Vince Lombardi trophy.
Fifth best passer rating of all time. Twelfth most passing touchdowns of all-time. Sixteenth most passing yards all-time. Seahawks franchise leader in all those categories. Ten-time Pro Bowler. Walter Payton Man of the Year winner. Super Bowl XLVIII Champion. Future Hall of Famer, and we will proudly die on that hill.

For the first time EVER, the Seahawks had an electrifying quarterback! Football instantly felt different. However it may have ended in Seattle won’t erase how fun… and special… the golden age was. Thank you, Russ. pic.twitter.com/P7vVXyo4xE
