New Orleans Saints fans are eager to see Tyler Shough take the next step in Year 2, but former Saints wide receiver Dez Bryant has another second-year quarterback in mind: Shedeur Sanders. After turning in a rookie-year performance that was consistently ranked worst among his peers, Sanders has fallen into a stalemate with a washed-up Deshaun Watson ahead of Cleveland Browns training camp. Bryant opines that getting out of that situation and into New Orleans, where he would presumably start, is what's best for his future in football.
"I think he’s a franchise QB and getting him out of Cleveland will be a plus for him," Bryant wrote on social media, "the Saints would be a great fit for him!"
It might be a reach to link Bryant to New Orleans so tightly when his time with the team lasted just one practice session (Bryant unfortunately went down with an Achilles injury in his first day of work, and never suited up for a game in black and gold), but Bryant has a strong resume. He earned an All-Pro nod and three trips to the Pro Bowl in his career with the Dallas Cowboys. But we've seen great players become poor talent evaluators before. Being good at one thing doesn't necessarily lead to succeed in the other.
So why the Shough disrespect? The Saints didn't play a single game in prime time last year and didn't give many casual fans much reason to tune in while fielding a hard-to-watch offense during the first half of the year. Things improved after head coach Kellen Moore benched Spencer Rattler for Shough, but this team still has a ways to go before they'll stop coming up in idle trade speculation like this. Fans outside New Orleans need to see it to believe it.
Maybe Sanders would benefit from a change of scenery. But if the Saints wanted him, they would have drafted him when they had the chance last year. They seem to have a good thing going with Shough and it's worth seeing it through. If he meets expectations, fantastic. If he doesn't, there's another rookie draft class to evaluate next year. They'll do better to wait and see how the cards fall than to reach on a quarterback who hasn't been good enough for a team with as low of hopes as the Browns.
