While Justin Herbert hasn't played for the Oregon Ducks since the 2019 season, fans are still actively following his NFL career with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Herbert was selected by the Chargers with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Immediately after being drafted, the expectation was put in place that Herbert would become a superstar at the NFL level.
So far, he has played at a very high level in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, he has been unable to lead the Chargers to postseason success.
Throughout his first six seasons at the professional level, Herbert has played in 95 regular season games. He has completed 66.5 percent of his pass attempts for 24,820 yards, 163 touchdowns, and 58 interceptions.
Herbert has also picked up 1,715 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground.
With that being said, one NFL insider and reporter has shared a stern warning for Herbert heading into the upcoming 2026 NFL season.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler believes that the goodwill that Herbert has received since coming into the NFL could start to fade if he is unable to take the next step this year.
“He’s at an inflection point in his career. There’s no doubt,” Fowler said. “Like, he’s got a lot of goodwill in the league. I think, in part, because of what he did those first couple of years was just on fire. And the skill set’s enormous. I think that’s part of it. It’s sort of intoxicating.”
Fowler continued on, providing the warning for the former Oregon star.
“The line was bad last year. It was really bad,” Fowler continued. “It’s not all on him that they fell apart last year. It is somewhat on him, but I think if he doesn’t get it done this year or show some sort of progress or maybe win a playoff game, that goodwill will start to fade.”
At the end of the day, the NFL is all about winning. For the Chargers, they need to see that Herbert can be the kind of quarterback who can power them to the Super Bowl.
No, Fowler isn't saying that Los Angeles would look to move on from Herbert if he doesn't lead the team on a deep postseason run. But, frustration could very well start to rise and the future could look a bit more unsure.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for Herbert. The 2026 season will be a pivotal year for the 28-year-old quarterback.
During his time with the Ducks, Herbert ended up playing four years with the program. He threw for 10,541 yards, 95 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. Herbert completed 64 percent of his passes and also ran for 560 yards and 13 touchdowns.
