Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is a controversial player. Everyone seems to have a strong opinion one way or another about the Chargers' signal caller.
Some are under the impression, fair or unfair, that Herbert has not lived up to expectations in regard to winning when it counts. Others look at his surroundings and contend that in time he will elevate his team to postseason success.
One NFL writer is on the more optimistic side with Herbert. The analyst ranks Herbert among MVP contenders in the National Football League.
Lou Scataglia of NFL Spin Zone gave his preseason MVP rankings for players who have yet to win NFL MVP. Scataglia compared Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert to Green Bay Packers franchise quarterback Jordan Love. He ranked Herbert fifth on his list with the following analysis.
"At some point, if Love can put some of the injuries aside and somehow reach another level, Love could be an MVP winner. We have seen quarterbacks hit their stride deeper into their careers. Quarterback play/development in the NFL is absolutely not linear.
Justin Herbert is in a similar boat to Love. Herbert has been consistently solid since entering the league back in 2020, but he's really not been anything more than that. He and the Los Angeles Chargers have been rather unspectacular in the playoffs, and despite checking all the boxes for the prototypical franchise quarterback, you always get the sense that Herbert left a bit of meat on the bone.
With Mike McDaniel now in and calling the plays as the offensive coordinator, his offensive genius might be what finally unlocks Herbert and helps him hit that elite tier."

No question, Herbert has something to prove in consistency when it counts. The Chargers have made the playoffs and failed to perform competitively on the offensive side of the football. Yet while Herbert shares that blame, it does not all fall on the talented Chargers passer.
Los Angeles has done plenty to reinforce Herbert's offensive line this offseason, while strengthening the defensive side in free agency and through the draft. If his surroundings perform at a high level, the Bolts' signal caller could easily find himself in Most Valuable Player conversations.
The Chargers have a shot to make a run in the 2026 season. Herbert will hope to be a huge reason why they succeed when the moments get bigger later in the season.
