Gene Smith has a new job.
The former Ohio State athletic director, who retired in 2024 after 19 years on the job, has been elected to the board of directors for M/I Homes, a company that builds single-family homes across the country. Smith is part of a nine-member board that also includes chairman Robert H. Schottenstein, who has been president of the company since May 1996 and was an Ohio State University trustee from 2005-14.
It's the latest in a line of similar jobs for Smith, who is keeping busy after stepping out of the spotlight at Ohio State. He is also a member of the board of directors for Under Armour, the Fiesta Sports Foundation, the National Football Foundation and the National Coalition of Minority Football. He was also a consultant for the University of Maryland in 2025.
M/I Homes shareholders approved Smith's appointment at their May 13 meeting.
"We are very pleased to have Gene join our Board," Schottenstein said in a statement. "He is a highly respected and accomplished leader, and his experience leading large, complex organizations, strategic perspective and sound judgment will benefit our Board and our company."
Smith is also president of Gene Smith Consulting LLC, which provides "leadership training services with a particular focus on assisting athletic conference commissioners, athletic directors and coaches in the collegiate environment," according to a release.
During Smith’s Ohio State tenure, the Buckeyes won 23 team and 89 individual national championships, 1,285 All-America honors and 95 team and 305 individual Big Ten titles. In 2019, he founded the Eugene D. Smith Leadership Institute to help prepare Ohio State student-athletes for life outside of the university.
