Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Tim Hasselbeck believes the best scenario for rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza to start with the Las Vegas Raiders would come midway through the 2026 season.

The Raiders’ schedule is one of the most competitive in the league, but Hasselbeck says keep an eye on Week 8 against the New York Jets as the ideal opportunity for Mendoza to take over as the starter. Kirk Cousins would likely open the season because of his experience and immediate command of the offense. Mendoza could benefit from spending the early part of the season learning from the longtime NFL starter before eventually taking over.

“You get about a month to be the starter, then have a bye week to evaluate things," Hasselbeck said. “I think that’s the best scenario."

Mendoza comes into his rookie season trying to make an immediate impact. The way to make that happen is live game experience, which is more valuable for a young quarterback than extended time on the bench. Being behind Cousins will be huge for Mendoza's development in all of this.

Many analysts expect Cousins to hold the job initially, but believe Mendoza eventually will see the field this season. The Heisman Trophy winner has taken steps to learn the West Coast offense and is playing under center for the first time in his career.
