Former Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan will be continuing his coaching career in the NBA.
According to ESPN, Donovan reportedly agreed to become the San Antonio Spurs’ lead assistant coach. The Spurs
Donovan, 61, left his head coaching job with the Chicago Bulls after six seasons this offseason. In his tenure, he compiled a 226-256 record and missed the playoffs the last four seasons.
After winning 31 games this past season, the Bulls opted to clean out the front office but intended to keep Donovan, as he had signed a multi-year extension a year ago.
The former Gators coach was in the mix to replace Hubert Davis at North Carolina, but the Tar Heels went with Michael Malone. Donovan was also a finalist for the Orlando Magic’s head coach job opening.
Donovan, who was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2025, led Florida to back-to-back national championships. Donovan made nine postseason trips, including a national runner-up finish in the 1999-00 season, and compiled 467 wins.
Donovan coached nine different Gators who became first-round picks in the NBA Draft.
