Former OKC Thunder head coach Billy Donovan agreed to become the lead assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.
Donovan joins a San Antonio team that reached the 2026 NBA Finals, where it lost in five games to the New York Knicks. ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the news Thursday.
After leading Florida to two national championships in 2006 and 2007, Donovan became OKC’s head coach in 2015. The Thunder went 243-157 (.608) under his leadership and made the playoffs in all five seasons, including a run to the 2016 Western Conference finals.
Donovan then spent the next six seasons as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, who went 226-256 (.469) during that time and made one playoff appearance in 2021-22. That team lost in the first round.
Donovan will be a valuable asset to Mitch Johnson, who just completed his first full season as San Antonio’s head coach. He’s still only 39, making him the third-youngest active head coach in the NBA.
