KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – Former East Tennessee State head football coach George Quarles is returning to the high school ranks, this time as the new head coach at Webb School of Knoxville.
Quarles, who led the Buccaneers for two seasons beginning in 2021, was hired to guide ETSU during a transitional period following one of the most successful eras in program history. In his two years in Johnson City, ETSU went 6-16 as Quarles worked to develop a young roster. The program parted ways with Quarles following the 2023 season.
Now, Quarles returns to a level where he built one of the most dominant resumes in high school football history. Before moving to the college ranks, Quarles spent 18 seasons at Maryville High School, compiling a 250-16 career record. Under his leadership, the Rebels won 11 state championships and produced two historic winning streaks — 74 straight games from 2004 to 2008 and 44 consecutive victories from 2013 to 2015. He is also the fastest coach in United States history to reach 200 career wins. He is a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and was named the Tennessee Titans Coach of the Year in 2005.
“I am extremely excited for this amazing opportunity at Webb School, and I cannot wait to meet with the players and get to work,” Quarles said in a school release.
Quarles replaces Don Mahoney, who stepped down in November after Webb finished the 2025 season with a 1-9 record.
