PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WJHL) – Former David Crockett High School standout Gage Peterson was selected by the Washington Nationals in the seventh round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Sunday.
The Jonesborough native earned Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year honors in his lone season at Appalachian State after transferring from Walters State Community College. Peterson went 8-1 with a 3.28 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 85 innings, tying for the second-most strikeouts in the Sun Belt.
Peterson was selected 196th overall and becomes the 50th player drafted in Appalachian State program history and the highest Mountaineer selected since 2020. Before transferring to App State, Peterson helped Walters State reach the 2025 Junior College World Series championship series.
