Former Cal State Bakersfield assistant coach Kevin Mays has officially been sentenced to four years in prison after he accepted a plea deal for charges of pimping, possessing youth or child pornography, and drug possession while armed, which closes a tumultuous chapter for the university.
Mays, 33, accepted a deal and entered a plea of no contest on July 1. Judge Tiffany Organ-Bowles ruled Thursday that Mays’ sentence would be shortened by 660 days for good behavior and time already served. He will also be required to register as a sex offender and pay an undisclosed amount of restitution to an unidentified victim.
He was set to face trial in March 2027.
An investigation was opened into Mays on Aug. 29, 2025, when then-head coach Rod Barnes received an anonymous tip about the temporary assistant coach also serving as a pimp across multiple states, according to ESPN reporter Shwetha Surendran.
The information was subsequently passed to local law enforcement departments in Bakersfield and Sacramento. Mays was arrested in September 2025 on charges related to pimping, child pornography, and drug/assault weapon possession. He was placed on leave and later terminated by Cal State Bakersfield.
The email named a woman Mays had allegedly trafficked for months. Police used up a sting operation by setting up a “date” with her. She initially told authorities Mays was her “boyfriend” and that he “routinely covered the costs” of her sex work.
The child pornography charge stemmed from a police forensic examiner reportedly finding 28 videos depicting sexual content involving minors on Mays’ phone.
Police also said Mays had automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines as well as methamphetamine and marijuana with intent to sell.
Mays initially pled not guilty to all 11 charges levied against him.
Officials at CSUB declined to comment when approached by ESPN.
David Torres, Mays’ attorney, told ESPN Thursday, Mays was “deeply upset … that his actions besmirched the program.”
CSUB announced the departures of Barnes and athletic director Kyle Conder in September. Barnes led the Roadrunners for 14 seasons.
Mays was a player at CSU Bakersfield from 2014-2016, earned all-conference honors, and led the Roadrunners to the NCAA Tournament. He returned to the program as a player-development coordinator in 2019 and was elevated to temporary assistant coach in June 2025.
