Clemsonbaseball’s list of transfer portal departures heading to the SEC continues to grow.

Former Tigers reliever Hayden Simmerson announced Thursday that he will continue his college career at Tennessee, giving the Volunteers an experienced bullpen arm with one season of eligibility still available, assuming he returns to school.

Simmerson arrived at Clemson after a successful run at Division II Catawba and quickly carved out a key role in the Tigers’ bullpen. He appeared in 19 games, the second-most of any Clemson pitcher during the season, and finished with four saves, a 3.62 ERA and a 1-2 record. His ability to limit hard contact stood out throughout the year, as opponents hit just .158 against him. He also struck out 46 batters while walking only 11 across 32.1 innings, good for a 0.90 WHIP.

The right-hander had already established himself before joining Clemson. During two seasons at Catawba, Simmerson earned all-conference honors twice while collecting 23 saves and posting a 3.48 ERA. He totaled 146 strikeouts in 126.2 innings over 57 appearances, making him one of the top relief pitchers at the Division II level before making the jump to the ACC.

Simmerson is now the third former Clemson player to announce a move to an SEC program this offseason. Infielder Jason Fultz Jr. is set to join Ole Miss, while catcher and outfielder Nate Savoie committed to Texas A&M.

His next step may not be Knoxville, however. The Salisbury, North Carolina native is eligible for this weekend’s MLB Draft, leaving open the possibility that he could begin his professional career instead of returning for another college season.
