The circumstances surrounding one of the biggest trades in Boston Celtics history are still largely unknown. The deal that sent former C's star Jaylen Brown to the rival Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday afternoon won't be official until Monday, July 6, so Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens hasn't faced the media yet or been forced to address the reasoning behind the shocking move.
For more clarity, Celtics fans and the rest of the inquiring NBA world had to go to Twitch. That livestreaming platform is where Brown has operated recently, and he went on his channel for the first time since the trade was reported to discuss his side of the story.
"I wasn't thrilled with the amount of respect that was shown during this process," Brown admitted. "I think there was a bit of lack of respect. I think it was fine at one point, and then out of nowhere things just kind of went left. Brad is probably getting a lot of the criticism. I wasn’t thrilled with the way he facilitated some of the conversations. But, I definitely think there’s more to it. There's definitely more to it. I just wish that the more to it could’ve been explained to me."
The five-time All-Star went on to mention favoritism, internal politics, and how bittersweet of an ending it was to his Celtics tenure. Who or what he was referring to exactly remains to be seen, but it's worth noting that, over the course of his 50-minute stream, Brown never mentioned several key members of the Celtics, including star forward Jayson Tatum, guard Derrick White, head coach Joe Mazzulla, and others.
"I thought I earned enough respect to get that explanation, but, hey, obviously I was wrong," Brown described of the stunning trade. "But that's life. We move on."
Now, just because Brown didn't name-drop Tatum or Mazzulla doesn't mean there's a hidden plot at play involving them. The whole situation is still murky and perhaps the ex-Celtic is most upset with Boston's ownership group, explaining why he didn't completely lambaste Stevens and instead implied that there was "more to" the trade than a general manager moving a star player.
Fans, pundits, and everybody else following along may never know the truth. But, Stevens — and maybe Celtics owner Bill Chisholm — will have to go in front of reporters and take a barrage of questions, at the very least.
Regardless of whether this swap was a financial directive or an in-house implosion, Brown is grateful for his 10 years in Beantown. He became an NBA champion, an NBA Finals MVP, and a hero in the Boston community.
"I put my heart into this city," Brown said on Thursday night in front of a virtual audience of thousands. "Because that’s what I said I would do when I got drafted. ‘I’m gonna go to war for this city.’ And I feel like that’s what I did. We got a championship. I felt like we could’ve got more, but I understand. I’m just grateful for my experience."
