Philippe Coutinho was once among the most talented stars in European football. From a treble-winning loan spell at Bayern Munich in 2019/20 after some dazzling nights at Liverpool to a €135 million move to Barcelona, the Brazilian’s career seemed unstoppable at its peak. Now, it has reached an unexpected and sobering turn.

Per a report from Tz, Coutinho has announced the termination of his contract with Vasco da Gama, his boyhood club in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The decision, confirmed via his social channels, came despite talks of a possible extension. Instead, the 33-year-old requested for a premature termination, one that the club granted.

The reason is deeply personal. Coutinho admitted he is “mentally exhausted.” Years of serious knee injuries have taken their toll, both physically and emotionally. Growing criticism from fans, including jeering during a recent cup match, only added to the weight.

In an emotional farewell, he described stepping away with a heavy heart, insisting his connection to Vasco remains strong. Whether this signals the end of his career or simply a pause remains unclear.
