Early in 2025, the San Francisco 49ers decided to cut bait with former third-round pick Jake Moody after a rough Week 1, and while the 49ers lucked out and found Eddy Pineiro, Moody had a quick stint with the Chicago Bears before finishing the year with the Washington Commanders.

Moody was set to hit free agency next week, but he's not going to get that opportunity, as the Commanders reportedly signed him to a new one-year contract, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

The 49ers originally took Moody with pick No. 99 overall in the 2023 NFL draft after a five-year career at Michigan, where he earned All-American honors twice and won the Lou Groza Award once.

While Moody had a strong start to his career, making 84% of his field goals and leading the league in extra points as a rookie, he made just 70.6% of his field goals in 2024, and the 49ers decided to cut him after he went 1-for-3 in their season opener this year.

In two games with the Bears and six with the Commanders, Moody made 18-of-20 field goals (90%) and 13-of-14 extra points.

It's interesting that Moody has found another home before San Francisco has locked down a kicker for the 2026 season, and after an impressive year, Pineiro will probably have a decent market.
