Earlier this week, it looked like the Washington Commanders had made a decision to move on from kicker Jake Moody. A restricted free agent, Washington chose not to tender Moody a contract for 2026, as he would have cost $3.5 million for next season. As it turns out, the move was procedural, and Moody is back in Washington.

On Friday, the Commanders reached an agreement with Moody on a one-year deal to return in 2026. While the official contract details have yet to be revealed, the numbers should come in less than the original tender.

Moody, 27, was a third-round draft choice by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2023 NFL Draft. After a strong rookie season, Moody struggled in 2024. He was cut after the first game in 2025 after missing two short field goals. The Chicago Bears signed Moody to their practice squad, and he would appear in two games for them, including their last-second win over Washington. Moody kicked the game-winning field goal in the Week 6 win.

After the Commanders moved on from struggling veteran Matt Gay, they signed Moody off Chicago's practice squad. In six games for the Commanders, Moody made 10 of 11 field goal attempts with a long of 56 yards and 10 of 11 point-after attempts.

For his career, Moody has made 64 of 82 of his field goal attempts (78%), and 107 of his 110 PATs (97%).

Don't be surprised if the Commanders bring in another kicker to compete with Moody this summer, as the position has lacked stability since GM Adam Peters was hired in 2024.
