The Philadelphia Eagles signed Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to a one-year contract in March.

Three months later, he has decided he won't actually be playing for the Eagles this season.

On Tuesday, the Eagles placed Tryon-Shoyinka on the reserve/retired list. He has evidently decided to end his NFL career.

Tryon-Shoyinka calls it quits at age 27.

He was once a first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, No. 32 overall in 2021 out of the University of Washington.

The 6-foot-5 outside linebacker had 4.0 sacks apiece in each of his first two seasons with the Bucs, then 5.0 sacks in 2023.

He declined to a 2.0-sack season in 2024 before leaving Tampa Bay.

In 2025, he played eight games with the Cleveland Browns and eight games with the Chicago Bears. Tryon-Shoyinka finished the campaign with 22 tackles, including 1.0 for a loss, and no sacks.

The Eagles likely felt Tryon-Shoyinka would add solid athleticism, experience and depth to the edge of their front seven, but "he had not been around much during the offseason program," writes Pro Football Talk.

Tryon-Shoyinka isn't a big name, and he didn't develop into the pass rusher that some would've hoped, but he continues the growing NFL trend of players retiring early.

There seem to be a variety of reasons, but some guys seem to simply not be overly inspired to fight for a spot on the fringes of rosters.

It's not clear what Tryon-Shoyinka plans to do next, but he's got a whole life ahead of him with which to apply the lessons he's learned during his time playing football.
