The Bucs have enjoyed having the multifaceted Nebraska Cornhusker in the middle of their defense for the last 14 seasons. Now, they will begin a new chapter as linebacker Lavonte David has made a decision on the future of his playing career in the NFL.
On Tuesday, David announced he was retiring from the NFL before speaking to the media at a press conference held by the team. After speaking to the media at the team's facility, David then made an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. On the show, he made several interesting comments, with the biggest arguably being that he at one point asked to be released or traded following the firing of Dirk Koetter.
He shared, "I never imagined playing for one team my whole career, you know, wherever team I was on, I was going to do my best. . .After 2018, when we fired Dirk Koetter, before BA (Bruce Arians) came in, I talked to Jason (Licht). I talked to my agent. I said, 'Man, I think it's time for me to move on.' I played in a 4-3 defense my whole career, and you guys are moving on to a 3-4, and I don't know how I work into that. I told them that I want to get traded, or you guys could release me."
Obviously, David did not get his wish at the time, and he credited meeting and speaking with Arians and Todd Bowles that led to him being excited to be a part of the Bucs long-term.
"They want me to be apart, you know, of the change. We feel like this is gonna change, and, um, BA was the first phone call I took. He was like, man, trust me, I want you to be a part of this turnaround that we're gonna have. . .Then I'll talk to Coach Bowles about the defensive stuff, and they were able to convince me to stay, and I'm glad I stayed."
The move to stay worked out well for both parties as they were able to secure a Super Bowl and also achieve legendary status with the team.
