The Philadelphia Flyers beefed up their blueline in the prospect pool by selecting Maksim Sokolovskii with the 27th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Sokolovskii, born in Kazakhstan and raised in Russia, adds a big body and a mean presence to the Flyers’ prospect pool as a left-shot defenseman, something Philly does not have much of in the pipeline. We talked about the pick already, so let’s talk about the player.
Sokolovski is a rangy defenseman. He has a 6’7″ frame, and he uses every inch of it. His stick becomes an extension of his body, making his reach even longer. Sokolovskii is not a lany 6’7″. On top of his towering frame, Sokolovskii is a 240lbs player that can be an absolute bruiser.
There is a ton of potential with the player. He draws a comparison to Nikita Zadorov and Jamie Oleksiak as a heavy hitter and a defensive defenseman.
There is the base for an absolute monster within Sokolovskii, who also has a strong net-front presence and a booming shot. However, the player is very much a raw talent and will take some time.
When asked what he can improve on in his game, Sokolovskii said, “Make my pace quicker, and always work on everything. I am just 17 years old.”
Again, he has all of the tools to be a really good middle pairing, stay-at-home blueliner that imposes a physical threat. However, there is still much to work on, even in his defensive game. Decision-making and reading are areas in which he can find great improvement. But again, he’s just 17. That’s natural.
Let’s grade the Flyers’ 1st Round Pick of Masksim Sokolovskii
Now, let’s put an immediate grade on this pick.
I really like the player. I think Sokolovskii has all of the tools to be an absolute bruiser on the blueline. I don’t think there will be much offensive upside with him. In 44 OHL games, he scored 2 goals and 8 total points. But offense is not, and will never be, the name of his game.
Despite the big shot, I don’t see much, if any, power-play future ahead for Sokolovskii, barring a strange offensive development over the next few seasons.
What I do see is a 6’7″, 240 lbs monster that will create fear on the ice. He is not someone you want to see coming at you at full speed.
I do think the Flyers reached a bit for the pick. While I am unsure that he would have made it out of the first round, I saw him as much more of a Round 2 project pick rather than a 1st-rounder. But, as mentioned earlier, Sokolovskii was, in fact, a late-climber in draft rankings. Scouts and experts obviously saw something in him. GM Danny Briere recognized that.
“We thought [Sokolovskii] could be a late pick for us. Then it seemed every month he just kept getting better and better,” said Briere.
He does bring a tenacity and size advantage that the Flyers are missing in the pipeline on defense. There is an element of potential that is exciting. Briere said he hopes he spends another year in the OHL before heading to the NCAA.
Without considering the trade compensation and still getting the player they wanted, I would give the Flyers’ pick a B. What do you think of the Maksim Sokolovskii pick?
