The Florida Power & Light PNJ Athlete of the Week continues this week, but with a slight twist as both Escambia and Santa Rosa County schools on spring break.
There will only be a boys athlete of the week award this week, as there weren’t enough girls events for a separate award.
Plenty of baseball teams were in action, while only Gulf Breeze softball and a couple area track athletes competed at invitational meets.
Pace baseball was the top performing area team this week, winning the Aggie Classic championship. The Patriots, who were ranked No. 1 in 6A in the March 10 FHSAA rankings, outscored their three pool play opponents 37-7 before beating Blanchard, Oklahoma 5-3 in the championship game.
Tate also went 4-0 at its home event, finishing in third place.
Last week, Escambia baseball’s Clayton Sanders won the boys award and Pace softball’s Gracie Ueberroth won the girls award. Sanders received 94.71% of the vote, while Ueberroth received 60.83% of the vote.
Voting closes at 11 a.m. Saturday, and the winners will be announced each Monday after the poll closes. Each weekly winner will be awarded a PNJ Athlete of the Week shirt provided by BSN SPORTS. An athlete can only win one time per season.
Nominees will be accepted via phone or email, but the poll is decided by PNJ staff. Send nominations by Sunday night.
