High school sports continues to roll through January.
Basketball is entering the last two weeks of the regular season. The Milton boys continue to separate themselves as the top team in the area, as do the Booker T. Washington and Navarre girls. Keep an eye on the Pensacola Catholic boys too, who are 5-0 in 2026 and 14-6 this season after a 66-63 win over Gulf Breeze last Friday.
Soccer starts district tournament play this week, with plenty of action throughout Escambia and Santa Rosa County.
Pace wrestling will compete in the Region 1-2A finals against Clay on Jan. 23 after taking down Lincoln and Middleburg on Jan. 15.
Postseason girls weightlifting starts this week as well. Pace will host the District 1-3A championship on Jan 19. 1A weightlifters will head to Baker on Jan. 21, while 2A weightlifters will head to Fort Walton Beach on Jan. 23.
Preparation for spring sports continues too, as lacrosse, softball and track and field can start practicing this week.
But the focus is still on winter sports for week 21 of the Florida Power & Light PNJ Athlete of the Week.
Last week Pace soccer’s David Bailey won the boys award and Pensacola Catholic’s Jenecia Swindell won the girls award. Bailey received 68.30% of the vote, while Swindell received 65.79% of the vote.
Voting closes at 11 a.m. Saturday, and the winners will be announced each Monday after the poll closes. Each weekly winner will be awarded a PNJ Athlete of the Week shirt provided by BSN SPORTS. An athlete can only win one time per season.
Nominees will be accepted via phone or email, but the poll is decided by PNJ staff. Send nominations by Sunday night.
Here are the boys nominees.
