Aug. 9—MITCHELL — Timely hitting and steady defense lifted the Flandreau Cardinals into the second round of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Sunday afternoon, topping Larchwood (Iowa) 5-3 at Cadwell Park.
Luke Gassman recorded a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-all stalemate in favor of the Cardinals. Moments later, pickup player Tash Lunday scored after a throwing error by the Diamonds after a Jacob Patterson single to shortstop, pegging the lead at 5-3.
Patterson's solo smash to left for a home run tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Bret Severtson picked up the pitching win with three no-hit innings of relief for the Cardinals, including a 1-2-3 ninth inning. He had four strikeouts and walked one. Lunday, who regularly plays for the Cardinals' in-town rival Flandreau Blue Teal, threw six innings in his start and yielded eight hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out four.
Gassman had two RBIs and JaColby Anderson, Austin Koenig and Patterson each had two hits for Flandreau, which improved to 9-14 on the season. Gassman and Austin King each had RBI singles for Flandreau in the fourth inning.
The Cardinals will take on tje Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks at 7:30 p.m. in the second round of the tournament on Wednesday at Cadwell Park.
Larchwood (11-6) led 2-0 in the third inning thanks to Mason Ver Meer's two-RBI single and Larchwood went ahead 3-2 in the sixth on a Brent Ripperda RBI single. Ripperda had two hits to lead the Diamonds' offense but Larchwood finished with five errors to Flandreau's two, which proved pivotal in a game with eight hits apiece.
Ryan Brasser threw all eight innings for Larchwood, allowing eight hits, five runs (one earned) and striking out five on 130 pitches.
