North Carolina’s transition to new head coach Michael Malone is quickly shifting to the recruiting trail, with a key early test arriving in the 2027 class.
The Tar Heels are set to bring in power forward Paul Osaruyi for an official visit in August, giving Malone an early shot at landing one of the most coveted prospects in the country.
Osaruyi, listed at 6-foot-9 and 225 pounds, is a five-star recruit ranked the No. 3 power forward and No. 8 overall player in the 2027 class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. His NIL valuation sits at $1.1 million, underscoring his status as one of the cycle’s most in-demand targets.
While speaking with Rivals’ Jamie Shaw, Osaruyi said North Carolina’s staff has separated itself early.
“The coaching and the staff stands out for me,” Osaruyi said. “How they tell me they’re going to play, it fits my play style. I want to go there to check it out, see how it is and see what they’re talking about.”
He said conversations with Malone have been “pretty good,” noting the coach regularly checks in and outlines what he needs to improve on the court.
North Carolina will have competition. Osaruyi has an official visit scheduled with Arkansas and holds offers from Kentucky, Kansas and UCLA. How his visit to Chapel Hill goes could offer an early indication of how quickly Malone can turn his NBA credentials into recruiting wins at the college level.
