DYERSVILLE — As Chicago White Sox star Tim Anderson rounded the bases on Aug. 12, 2021, he looked around at the magnificent setting.

Anderson smiled as he watched the fireworks saluting his walk-off home run soar into the sky, fans in the stands rise to their feet and his teammates sprint to home plate to welcome him following an exhilarating win over the Yankees in the first Major League Baseball game at the Field of Dreams movie site.

“It was crazy,” Anderson told the Register in a phone interview.

Anderson’s shot into the Iowa corn was the perfect ending to a perfect night. It included a back-and-forth battle that began with a touching tribute from actor Kevin Costner and ended with Anderson's two-run shot. A nationally televised audience on FOX relished it all.

“That’s exactly how you would want it to go,” Anderson said.

MLB officials' goal? Try to replicate some of the magic from that iconic Iowa evening. They’ll get that chance when the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies play at the new ballpark near the movie site. The 6:30 p.m. CT game will be streamed on Netflix. It’s the third MLB game to take place at the site and the first since the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds took the field in 2022.

The first game, in 2021, set a high bar for drama.

“I think it was a pretty cool scene to pull off the Field of Dreams game,” Anderson said. “Now that they’re bringing it back, I think it’s even cooler just to keep it going.”

Costner's pregame speech was followed by a memorable game in which the Yankees and White Sox both blasted balls into corn stalks.

“I just knew the ball was flying (during batting practice),” Anderson said.

Now new memories can be made. Here are five things to watch when the Twins and Phillies take the field in Dyersville.

How will Kevin Costner be involved?

Costner is expected to be a part of the game in some capacity. MLB and Netflix executives kept their plans close to the chest this week. His epic walk-out in 2021 set the tone for the evening. The following year, FOX leaned into the father-son angle of the movie by having Ken Griffey Jr. and his father Ken Griffey Sr., play catch on the field before the Reds-Cubs matchup.

How will the pregame show go?

MLB announced that more than 25 members of the Baseball Hall of Fame will appear as part of a pregame ceremony. According to MLB, it’s the largest gathering of living Hall of Famers at a game since the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, where nearly 50 showed up during the famous ballpark's final season. Who will be in Dyersville and how will they be involved? The pregame show could have a different flow to it with Netflix streaming the game for the first time after FOX televised the first two games.

This is a big game for both teams

The trip to Dyersville is more than a sightseeing venture for the Twins and Phillies. Both teams are battling for spots in the postseason. The Twins have been one of the surprises in the American League and are vying for a spot in the postseason by winning the Central Division or securing a Wild Card spot. The Phillies have some ground to make up in the National League’s East Division but a Wild Card spot is well within reach for a team with plenty of star power.

How many homers will go into the Iowa corn?

The park is very hitter-friendly. The Yankees and White Sox combined to belt eight homers during the 2021 game, with Aaron Judge smacking two. Surprisingly, the Cubs and the Reds did not hit any home runs in the 2022 game. But like 2021, there is tons of firepower coming to Dyersville with former Iowa Cubs star Kyle Schwarber and two-time MVP Bryce Harper among the big bats.

Will the weather cooperate?

There's an 80% chance of rain Thursday in Dyersville. If wet weather forces a postponement, the Twins and Phillies will stay in the area and the game would be made up the following day.

The 2021 and 2022 games were played under clear skies.
