Finnish freestyle skier Elias Lajunen suffered a violent fall in the Big Air qualification at the Winter Olympics on Sunday.

The 18-year-old lost control after take-off and crashed onto the icy surface with his back. Lajunen is the son of three-time Olympic champion and former Nordic combined skier Samppa Lajunen.

Elias Lajunen initially lay motionless, but after receiving medical treatment and encouragement from the spectators, he was carried away on a sled. He gave a thumbs up – a first sign that he was OK. Lajunen did not return to the competition.

Big Air involves performing aerial tricks after jumping off a large ramp and landing safely. The jury awards points for factors such as the degree of difficulty, clean execution, height and landing.
