The 2026 FIFA World Cup is bringing up the Seattle Seahawks’ biggest problem (of which there are not many) ahead of its first game in Lumen Field, which will be referred to as “Seattle Stadium” by the tournament, kicking off Monday, June 15th.
While the Seahawks are as well run as any organization in the NFL, they’ve struggled with playing surfaces in this stadium since it opened. This is just the latest chapter in a longstanding issue. The NFLPA’s 2026 report card summed it up; excellent in everything, terrible in Home Game Field.
FIFA foresaw catastrophe brewing, and took action last year. They had the Washington State legislature and Gov. Bob Ferguson approve $19.4 million for upgrades to the stadium, with replacing the stadium’s infamous artificial turf for natural grass surmised to be the biggest of these upgrades. They invested in irrigation, vacuum ventilation, and floodlights. However, they said the natural grass will be gone after the World Cup, and back to artificial turf for the 2026 NFL season.
During a February article on this topic, Gregg Bell mentions that 15 of 30 NFL teams use natural grass and that it’s the owner’s decision. Artificial grass saves them money and is much easier to replace when dealing with concerts and other events, and if they’re not used to maintaining it, it would be a big undertaking to make the change. The Seahawks are currently up for sale, though. If a new owner wanted to come in and make an immediate splash to get on everyone’s good side, this might be one of the clearest ways to do so.
