While the ultimate goal at the World Cup is to claim the championship, there are also individual honors to be won along the way.

One of those is the coveted Golden Boot, which goes to the tournament's top goal-scorer. Paolo Rossi, Ronaldo and Harry Kane are among the legends to have won the award in previous World Cups. In 2022, France's Kyian Mbappe earned the honor by scoring eight goals − the most since Ronaldo did it for Brazil 20 years earlier.

The Golden Boot is different from the similarly named Golden Ball award, which goes to the best player in the World Cup.

Here is a list of the World Cup's top scorers dating back to 1930.

Golden Boot winners, World Cup leading scorers

The award for the top goal-scorer in the World Cup became official in 1982, when it was first called the Golden Shoe award. Since 2010, it has been known as the Golden Boot.

Through 1994, multiple players were able to be awarded the Golden Boot. Since then, however, FIFA has instituted a tiebreaker system to select a single winner. If players are tied then assists is the first tiebreaker, followed by fewest minutes played.

The Golden Boot winners and (pre-1982) top scorers from each FIFA World Cup, with their country and goals scored in parentheses are below:
