Florida high school football will have just one set of rankings next year.
The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors unanimously approved a measure to use MaxPreps’ rankings to determine seeding for the playoffs.
The vote was 10-0. FHSAA executive director Craig Damon previously voiced his support for using MaxPreps' rankings.
The FHSAA has been using its own power rankings to determine playoff seeding.
Those rankings have often been wildly different from MaxPreps rankings. Having multiple sets of rankings — and not knowing what goes into the FHSAA formula — has been a source of confusion and frustration for both teams and fans.
With the FHSAA set to adopt an Open Division in 2026, having just one clear set of rankings could make things much easier.
The Open Division will take the top eight teams in the state, regardless of classification, and place them into their own postseason bracket. The FHSAA has not yet announced how those eight teams will be determined.
Damon told the USA TODAY Florida Network in December that he is open to having human oversight over the process, but it’s expected that MaxPreps’ rankings will play a major factor in the process.
