The Florida High School Athletic Association will be voting on a proposal to use MaxPreps rankings to rank and seed teams for the football state championships.

FHSAA executive director Craig Damon has recommended the Board of Directors approve the proposal at its meeting on Feb. 23.

The FHSAA has been using its own formula to determine rankings and seeding, which has been wildly different from MaxPreps at times.

The FHSAA will have two fewer classes in 2026. The board initially voted to eliminate one class, then later determined to merge the Rural Class with Class 1A.

With the Open Division, an elite eight-team bracket, starting in 2026, using just one set of rankings would relive confusion.

Based on the final regular season FHSAA power rankings in 2025, the eight teams in the Open Division would have been DeLand, Cardinal Mooney, Vero Beach, Buchholz, Miami Northwestern, Mandarin, Carrollwood Day and Bolles.

MaxPreps' final regular season rankings included St. Thomas Aquinas, Miami Central and Chaminade-Madonna in the top eight.

The FHSAA has not yet officially announced how it will determine the eight teams in the Open Division, but Damon told the USA TODAY Network in December that he is open to a human oversight committee to ensure the best teams are selected.
