Diamondbacks' Taylor Widener: Collects 12 strikeouts Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Widener tallied a season-high 12 strikeouts and tossed six shutout innings for Double-A Jackson in its 11-3 triumph over Jacksonville on Wednesday.

After logging only seven strikeouts in 11 innings over his previous two starts, Widener implemented a mechanical tweak in his bullpen session prior to Wednesday's outing, according to Rob Terranova of MiLB.com. The adjustment evidently paid dividends, as the right-hander mowed down the opposition in efficient fashion, yielding only five baserunners during the start and finishing the night with a 1-2-3 sixth inning. The 23-year-old now carries a 2.53 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 89:22 K:BB over 67.2 innings on the season, cementing his status as one of the top arms in the Diamondbacks organization.

I was a little skeptical about their first 2 picks, I was hoping for Kowar of FLA & Steele Walker but the Thomas kid intrigued me. ARZ was also able to sign SS Blaze Alexander who slipped because of signability concerns but he could be a real steal taken in 12th round IIRC.

I’m convinced Drew Ellis will be Goldy’s replacement. Pavin Smith has been a disappointment.

1 - RHP Jon Duplantier

2018 stats, Double-A: 7 GS, 35.2 IP, 2.52 ERA, 41 K, 11 BB

Duplantier is the lone Diamondbacks prospect in the current MLB Pipeline top 100. In this sense, it feels like he “must” be the O’s headline demand from this system. However, he last pitched on May 27 due to biceps tendinitis, and the 2016 third round pick came from Rice with an injury history: He missed his whole sophomore season with a shoulder injury and battled elbow soreness after being drafted two years ago.

The prospect folks see Duplantier with a four-pitch mix and project him with a high floor to be at least a mid-rotation starter, if he stays healthy. Good luck getting past the Orioles doctors. It may be that the O’s shouldn’t even bother asking for him.

The rest of the best performances from top prospects Thursday

D-backs No. 23 prospect Brian Shaffer racked up nine strikeouts over six scoreless innings in Class A Kane County's 4-1 win over Clinton. The 21-year-old right-hander allowed just two hits, issued one walk and threw 57 of his 80 pitches for strikes. Shaffer owns a 0.47 ERA across his past three turns and a 2.78 ERA in 16 starts this season, during which he's compiled 95 strikeouts, second most in the Midwest League, and 19 walks in 90 2/3 innings.

Diamondbacks' Ildemaro Vargas: Produces five-hit game
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Vargas went 5-for-5 with a double and a stolen base Thursday for Triple-A Reno in its 5-3 win over Tacoma.

The career-best five-hit performance extended Vargas' hitting streak to 19 games, with the infielder now maintaining a .412/.474/.529 slash line in July. The 27-year-old received his first MLB action last summer but has yet to earn a promotion to the big leagues in 2018 with the Diamondbacks' top three middle infielders -- Nick Ahmed, Ketel Marte and Daniel Descalso -- all steering clear of the disabled list. So long as that trio stays healthy in the second half, Vargas likely won't receive a promotion until September.

Diamondbacks' Jasrado Chisholm: Elevated to High-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Chisholm was promoted to High-A Visalia, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports.

The Bahamian was promoted Thursday, according to Renaldo Dorsett of Tribune 242, the newspaper from Chisholm's home country. The 20-year-old rattled off a .244/.311/.472 line for Low-A Kane County but included 15 homers, 43 RBI, 52 runs and eight stolen bases. Playing as one of the younger athletes in the Midwest League, this promotion will provide a stouter test in his progress, but he's quickly gaining more attention.
