I disagree it should have been done a year ago since there is no way the Cards could have been certain Fitz would meet all the escalators that would jump this thing up. I think the 2nd Pro Bowl thing really did the trick right?

HOWEVER...

This thing should have been done during the year or immediately following the end of the season instead of waiting until the last week or so to get serious about it.

anytimeuwnt is waaaaaay over-reacting against Fitz in this. There is something holding up a deal and it is enough that Fitz has still not restructured. I think it is completely irresponsible to hold Fitz 100% accountable for this although certainly he might be partly to blame.

Faneca, BTW, has hit his high point for production...all down hill from here guys.

Not true. Green in his presser to announce the deal even stated it was a good deal until the last two years. The team, the Bidwill's, Green, Whiz and Graves all new this deal had to be restructured prior to this year. Yet the cards dont start negotiations until, what, Jan-Feb? Unacceptable

Joeshmo has been saying for ages too that his deal was written to be renegotiated before the last 2 years or it would be unmanageable. If people on this message board figured that out I gotta believe the Cards management knew it too. Someone somewhere dropped the ball unless Fitz just flat out refused to work with us on it because he was greedy but I don't know that to be true.

I do agree Faneca is past his prime but I think short term he could have helped us.

We better resolve Fitz soon though because we know the domino effect will be Anquan's deal. If they're not going to pay them both huge money they need to decide that now and make a decision on which guy to trade. I'd prefer to keep them both but if finances make that impossible, make a decision and pull the trigger.

Hell, Denny Green wrote about that, AS SOON as the contract was signed. The Cards knew about it, and didn't address it for whatever reason.

Sure seems that way to me but I've been out of the loop for 2 weeks so I don't know all the background.

I hope we can keep Fitz but I realize the money may force us to make a deal with him or Anquan. I get the impression we're not going to give him a big new deal and then deal with Anquan's agent who will want the same thing. So if Fitz plays hardball over money either he or Anquan is probably going to end up traded. I think the Cards are pretty certain they don't want to pay them both similarly huge deals, one yes, two no.

How is that possible? Anquan Boldin is under contract for 2 or 3 more seasons, right? According to all the experts on this board, Boldin's the kind of team player that won't hold the franchise hostage over something as ridiculous as money. All Graves and Whisenhunt will have to say is, "Sorry, Anquan. We're trying to make the team better and win a championship. You're going to have to wait until your contract is up."

Then, Anquan is going to say, "That's great, guys. I hope you find more guys like Kendrick Clancy, Terrance Holt, Marcel Shipp, Milford Brown, and Orlando Huff to spend your money on. I'm going to quietly wait my turn for a new contract. Maybe Fitz will let me right shotgun with him in one of his new Bentleys. Also, my agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is fine with this, as well."

Could it be that certain incentives had to be reached before the salary got this high, and thus, they didn't know it would get there until late in the year?

Ridiculous. This is completely blown out of proportion.

Here is your money waiting in the wings.

Fitz signs a new contract (cap space added)
Dansby signs a new contract (cap space added)

Next year's offseason
Edge GONE
Berry/Okeafor GONE
Wells GONE
Warner GONE
Shipp GONE
Terrell Smith GONE

There are some names with hefty price tags on them.

Plenty of room to re-sign Boldin or Wilson or Dockett if nessicary, and room to spare for Free agency.

Fitzgerald is making a lot of money right now, but no matter what the guy is not going to be 50% of our payroll.

Seriously this is getting ridiculous.

Nope. Like I said in another thread, its not like the Cards had no idea that Fitz might make the probowl this year.....

OK, question for both of you. Just exactly what day should the Cards have known that Fitz was going to reach all of the incentives on his contract? Was it a day in Sept.? Nov.? When? You do realize that we are talking about a season that's only been over for 2 months?

You forgot the smiley face.

No he didn't. If he can make one pro bowl, you can easily deduce that he might make another one, and can therefore prepare against it. Our 'preparing against it', which the team acknowledged, was signing him to an extension, which hasn't happened yet.

Baloney. You cant "easily deduce" that. Its football and you just never know. As was said earlier(Gambo) the perfect set of circumstances occured allowing him to get to another PB.

Aren't the probowl rosters announced in Dec. So thats 3 months to work on it, instead of waiting until a week or two before FA starts.

I'm assuming that's sarcasm. I love Boldin as much as the next but we all know if Fitz gets a huge new deal Rosenhaus will want similar treatment for Anquan and Boldin isn't going to just happily play out his contract that just isn't done in the NFL.

Hopefully Fitz will come to terms, they won't be pie in the sky ridiculous terms, and we can keep Anquan too but there's a very real possibility that
we're going to be forced to move one of them because of contract IMHO.

We have more cash than we used to with the new stadium but I can't see us willingly paying out 2 huge signing bonuses to them this year and also paying out in free agency and our first round pick. Maybe we luck out and one of Fitz or Anquan decides to be a saint but you don't hire Drew Rosenhaus to be cap friendly to a team and Fitz' agent sure isn't doing us any favors yet either they're both going to do what they perceive their job to be, to get the most money for their client.

Exactly Russ. Q and Fitz are both super guys. Which is probably precisely why they have two of the toughest agents in the business to handle their contract.

Yes they are and we've been hearing about them negotiating on this every since it was announced that Fitz had made his incentives in December, 2007.

If I remember correctly, wasn't Graves supposed to meet with Parker during the Pro-Bowl week and Parker wasn't available?

:biglaugh: So we cannot reasonably assume that Fitz will play well enough to make another Pro Bowl? Then why the heck are we going to give him such a huge contract?

You see a player like Fitz, with such a quality resume before the season, and a kicker that makes his contract outrageous if he makes the Pro Bowl, and you don't think there's any way you can deduce he could make that bonus? Baloney to you, Shane, because that's ludicrous. Even the team admitted knowing it was a possible problem before the season. I'm not getting into an argument about whether talks should have started sooner or not. I'm just commenting that yes, it is reasonable to have expected this to happen.
