The Atlanta Falcons made two of the most-surprising quarterback moves in the NFL in 2024. First, they signed the then-35 year old Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year deal despite his coming off a major knee injury. Then, they used the eighth overall pick in the draft on Washington star Michael Penix.

The pairing didn't work out well and Cousins is now suiting up for the Las Vegas Raiders, where he is expected to start - but his real job will be helping to coach up this year's No. 1 overall pick, Fernando Mendoza.

Cousins may be well past his prime playing days, but his experience is a valuable tool that the Raiders should take advantage of. Here's what Penix told The Athletic about what he learned from Cousins in Atlanta.

“The person that he was for me, just helping me make sure I was locked in each and every day, making sure that I understood some of the reads, some of the things that you would get in the league,” Penix said. “Kirk is definitely gonna help (Mendoza) understand getting through your reads, understanding when to eliminate different route concepts so that you can get to the back side and continue to play great football.”

Penix has not fully recovered yet from his ACL tear yet, but he is participating in 7-on-7 drills and competing with former Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa for the right to start for the Falcons this year. While he has made some progress since his first action at this level, Penix still needs some work in a few areas.

Last season, Penix passed for 1,982 yards nine touchdowns and three interceptions over nine games before going down against the Carolina Panthers. His big-play ability is what got him drafted eighth overall, but he needs to improve his accuracy to beat out Tagovailoa for the starting job.

Penix will look to separate himself as the team begins its third round of OTAs this week in Flowery Branch.
