There are no do-overs in life or in the NFL, but you can bet a lot of teams would like a second chance to rethink a bad decision at quarterback.
In 2024, the Atlanta Falcons made two of them for the price of one. First, they signed veteran Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year, $180 million deal that aged about as well as ice cream left out in the middle of July. Next, they took Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the draft. While Penix hasn't had much of a chance to show what he can do, his time may be running out in Atlanta.
In a new 2024 NFL redraft piece from Zachary Pereles at CBS Sports, the Falcons pass on Penix and take Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell with the No. 8 pick.
It's understandable that the Falcons front office would pass on Penix, but given what they got from Cousins we'd have to think that they would take another quarterback, instead. While Drake Maye, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels were off the board, Bo Nix was still available, going to the Denver Broncos again at No. 12 overall.
Mitchell is a very solid cover-corner, even if he has zero career interceptions so far. He does have 29 pass breakups and has only allowed a 49.1% completion rate and a 74.5 passer rating so far. Mitchell would certainly be a huge upgrade over what the Falcons are getting from Mike Hughes right now.
However, until Penix or Tua Tagovailoa (or someone else) proves they're worthy of a franchise QB label it doesn't make a lot of sense to target anyone but a quarterback in this exercise.

"The Falcons' stunning decision to draft Penix just weeks after signing Kirk Cousins in free agency doesn't look any better in this redraft. Penix hasn't been on the field much, suffered yet another major knee injury last year and hasn't been very good when on the field. Now he's battling Tua Tagovailoa for the starting job. Instead, the Falcons land an absolute stud in Mitchell, who was an All Pro last year."
